Accommodation in Berlin - Host Family

>> back to Accommodation Overview

Living with a German host-family will not only be a great help to you in learning the German language fast, it is an interesting intercultural experience as well. Younger students especially, tend to feel more comfortable living with a host-family rather than in a youth hostel, a shared apartment or a student dormitory. The student will get a furnished room in the house or flat of the family, while kitchen and bathrooms are shared. Host families can be booked with or without boarding.

German families working together with EURASIA are always pleased to welcome foreign students into their homes and to share part of their everyday lives with them.

What does ahost family mean exactly?

Host families come in all shapes and sizes. In addition to the storybook host-family (these days more an exception than a rule) with two parents and two children we also have single mothers with children and sometimes widows or parents whose children have already left home.

As a guest student you will have to try to fit into the lifestyle of your host-family. Sometimes there may be some initial misunderstandings or difficulties in adjusting, however in most cases you can tackle this easily with patience, a sense of humour and through the development of your intercultural skills. If there is something that you cannot clarify with your host family, the EURASIA student service team is there to help you settle any disputes or problems.

What are the minimum requirements to our families?

All host-families working with EURASIA are screened and selected with the expectation that they will do their utmost to provide a living environment fulfilling the following demands:

  • Treat the students as family members and not as paying guests.
  • Provide a clean, comfortable and furnished room with central heating and equipped with a bed, desk, chair and table-lamp for studies and a wardrobe.
  • Allow students to make regular use of all communal facilities including shower, kitchen, kitchen utensils, and washing machine (once a week).
  • Solve communication problems swiftly by staying in close contact with the EURASIA Institute.
  • Respect the cultural background of the student and private sphere of the student.
