To apply for a PhD at a university in Germany, overseas students must fulfill certain requirements. These include both the academic requirements as evidenced by the transcripts as well as the language qualifications required of candidates for doctoral studies at a German university. Additionally the candidate must meet all the formal requirements.

In all cases, basic knowledge of the German language is a must. It is not possible in all cases to write the doctoral thesis in the English language.

Excellent Bachelor's and Master's Degree in the same or related scientific field
Clearly formulated thesis proposal with detailed research timetable and list of publications
Stringent resumé with no gaps and showing clear academic or professional career pathway

Language Requirements

For a doctoral thesis in the German Language
TestDaF Level 4 in all 4 test sections or DSH 2
Intensive German language course from A1 to C2

TestDaF /DSH exam preparation course
TestDaF or DSH examination

For a doctoral thesis in English language
IELTS 6.0. – 7.0
