Rumanian is spoken as a first language by around 26 million people, most of whom live in Rumania and the Republic of Moldova. Its name notwithstanding, the Moldovan language, which is the official language of the Republic of Moldova, is practically identical to the Rumanian language.

In Vojvodia (in Serbia), Rumanian is one of the official languages alongside Serbian, Hungarian, Slovakian, Croatian and Russian. It is the native tongue of around 30,000 people.
