Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, and one of the 23 officially recognized languages in India. It also serves as a means of communication across the different regional languages. Urdu is the mother tongue of 58 million people around the world, and is spoken by 150 – 200 million people altogether, including those speaking it as a second language.

Linguistically, Urdu is influenced by Persian and Arabic and indeed uses a variant of the Persian alphabet. Communicating with speakers of Hindi presents no difficulties.
